The information below pertains to our testing with the AFR 220 heads. This sale is for a set of 220cc heads setup for hydraulic roller cams. From what we have seen on the flow charts, the 220cc heads do slightly edge out the 210’s but not by much. We suggest using the 220cc heads on very aggressive setups coupled with cams in the 600 lift or more range, with higher amounts of duration than what is common in most street rods. These heads will most likely prevail when run hard. We have not done any testing yet on the 220’s but they are sure to make excellent power. These heads may be on the larger than needed side for most hyd. roller cam builds, but should you ever decide to increase your cam and or cubic inch on your engine, you would not be outgrowing the 220cc heads for certain. 

As our company founder explains it, the results you experience with the AFR heads will vary greatly by what type setup you are running. The engine combos we have dynoed are what most people have chosen to use as far as cam and intake selection goes, and we have some of the results listed below. The engines dynoed with the 220cc heads were mostly sbc 421, 427, and 434

 engines in the 10:1 to 10.5:1 compression range, give or take. We also did an aggressive 406 build with the 210 heads. Normally, we use the 195cc heads on the 406 but found the 220’s suitable due to the cam size of this one particular engine. All run on pump gas. 


Our 421 through 434 engine ads have a selection of four different cams and these engines all come with AFR heads. This has given us a great opportunity to see how they performed. We were able to test several different cam setups with these heads. This will give you an idea on what these heads are capable of with a given combination of cam, intake, rockers, and carb. This may also help you select a proper cam for your build. 

We feel the 220cc AFR heads would perform very well on a medium to aggressive 421, 427, or 434 build or a somewhat Pro-street 406. As mentioned, below is just an excerpt from our 421-434 ads. If you’re using a lower lift than those listed below, then it would be fair to say the hp will drop, but not by much, providing your lift and duration are somewhat close to any of the cams mentioned below. This will give you an idea of what kind of power to expect with these heads, and it can certainly help you choose a cam and intake.

Please do understand that a cam is not included with the heads. This is just a guide to show what you may expect with a given combination when building your engine.

An excerpt from our engine ad about our new dyno.

As of 9/15/2013 we have completed installation of our brand new Super Flow 902S dyno. In the past, we have outsourced our dyno work. Never being able to do the research and development we truly wanted, prompted us to make the $105,000 investment. Needless to say, it’s been the best investment we have ever made. Every aspect of our engines can now be monitored, calibrated, and tuned. Best of all, we can see what combos make the best power, with consideration to drivability. 

One thing we have noticed is that the de-tuned engines with different cam and intake combos certainly do have less top end horse power, as expected, but the torque increase in the low rpm range is much greater than the higher horse power setup. This increase in torque down low is what you want if you’re sporting around on the street, rather than all out racing. The de-tuned version of our engines will also allow you to set the car up closer to stock and increase drivability to a very high degree. Throttle response is also noticeably better. 

One of the worst mistakes you can make building up an engine is to get a mismatched combination of parts. We know about combinations and how they work. Take a test drive in a car with over 400hp vs. a 300hp or less and you will then see what you’re missing. The exhaust sound under load is very pleasing. We are very pleased with everything about the AFR heads. Few if any of the others know much about the correct way to setup a set of cylinder heads

I’m sure
many of you have noticed there are 2 high performance engine builders in
Kingsport, TN with similar names, leading to a great amount of confusion. 

We are
Skip White Performance, NOT White Performance and Machine.

Due to
the name similarity, many customers looking for us online inadvertently find
them, thinking we are the same company. Definitely not…there is no connection
between the two companies. We don’t have a problem with free enterprise
(competition). However, when the competition builds their foundation on such
things as a name similarity and their supposedly long history of being in
business, then we think it’s about time we set the record straight.

We have
owned White Performance since 2003, with the exception of the machine shop,
which was owned by Fred White at the time. He continued to operate the machine
shop and build engines for us while we continued selling online under the eBay
user ID of skipwhite and the eBay store name of whiteperformance1.

Due to
their limited production capability and many disagreements about the engine and
head building process as well as workmanship, we opted to open a full scale
machine shop of our own a few years later. Fred White began competing against
us even though our contract had a non-compete clause in it.

As our
business grew, we opened a second, much larger warehouse and machine shop
around 2011, located on Brookside Ln. in Kingsport TN. By putting heart and
soul in this company, we have become the number one street rod engine builder
in the nation. 

Fred sold
his shop to an investor in 2016 and the new owners continue to reap the
benefits from this confusion between the two shops. This investor lacked
any knowledge of this industry. They continue to use the White Performance
& Machine name. Contrary to what is posted on their website, Fred White is
no longer associated with the company in any way. Their main spiel in
advertising is, “In business since 1979,” when in fact, we purchased
the White Performance company in 2003, with the exception of the machine
shop. 

All in
all, we have been in this business going on 17+ years. Skip White’s passion has
been owning and building street rods for 47 years on a personal level. The
knowledge he has gained over time has allowed him to venture into this business
and succeed to a very high level. 

The great
pretenders continue capitalizing on our success due to the name similarity, but
have been degrading our reputation. We have been getting calls nearly on a
daily basis from people that now realize there are two shops in this town with
very similar names. Customers complain of serious problems in getting their
orders in a timely manner from them. They think they purchased their cylinder
heads from us. Due to the confusion, there is an increasing amount of negative
feedback that is affecting our name within the street rod community, when in
fact we have a near perfect reputation in this industry. We have an
“A+” rating with the Better Business Bureau and we have maintained
the A+ rating for many years.

FORWARD TO PRESENT DAY…We have become the largest street rod engine builder
in the nation. Our engines, rotating assemblies, and cylinder heads are built
to very high standards and shipped to our customers in a timely manner. We are
a premier seller on eBay with a positive feedback score of well over 206,000
and growing, as compared to our competitor’s score of approximately 24,000.

Our
engines are custom-built to our customers’ specifications and are shipped in
approx. 2-5 weeks, perhaps sooner, depending on the season. Our rotating
assemblies usually ship out in about one week or less, and our heads ship in
about a week or less.

RETURN POLICY


Should a problem occur, please contact us. If a return is necessary, please contact us for an RGA number and return authorization. The RGA number must be included on the return label. If an item is returned without an RGA number, it will not be processed. A full description of what the problem is needs to be included with any returned product with your contact info, and proof of purchase. Even though you may have explained the problem to us, and been granted permission to return the product, we must have a written explanation and a contact number included with the product. It is also recommended that you include the name of the person from our company that you have been in contact with. You must send the item back to us in a trackable manner (USPS Priority Mail, FedEx, etc.) and keep the tracking info of the returned product. Please give ample time for returns to be processed. Following these guidelines will make the return process work as it should.

You may receive a verification and tracking number shortly after purchase, but this does not necessarily mean that your product has shipped. It would be fair to say that 98% of products will be going out the day the shipping label is issued. On occasion, the product may not ship out until the next day after the label has been issued.
