Measuring Pushrod Length

Measuring for proper pushrod length on a V8 engine is a critical step in ensuring the engine operates efficiently and reliably. The pushrod length directly affects valve timing, lift, and overall valvetrain geometry, making it essential to get this measurement right. An incorrect pushrod length can lead to poor engine performance, excessive wear on components, and even engine failure in extreme cases.

To measure for the correct pushrod length, you'll need an adjustable pushrod length checker, a set of feeler gauges, and some basic tools. Start by installing the length checker in place of the actual pushrod, ensuring that the camshaft is on the base circle for the valve you're measuring. Slowly adjust the length checker until there is zero lash (no gap) between the rocker arm and the valve tip. Once you've achieved zero lash, lock the adjustable pushrod and remove it from the engine. Measure the length of the checker with a caliper or micrometer to determine the proper pushrod length needed.

It's important to account for the type of lifters and rocker arms you're using, as different components can affect the final pushrod length. For instance, hydraulic lifters typically require a bit of preload, so you may need to shorten the pushrod slightly compared to a solid lifter setup. Additionally, always double-check the geometry by cycling the engine and observing the rocker arm's motion. The ideal pushrod length should position the rocker arm's roller tip centrally over the valve stem during the entire lift cycle, minimizing wear and ensuring smooth operation.

If you're using aftermarket cylinder heads, camshafts, or other performance components, it's especially important to measure for the correct pushrod length rather than assuming the stock length will suffice. With the right tools and a methodical approach, you can ensure your V8 engine's valvetrain is properly set up, leading to better performance and longevity.
