Preload:
We are often asked about the correct pre-load. We know that opinions on these subjects can vary widely. Based on our experience, a pre-load setting between 1/2 turn and 3/4 turn usually works well for most setups.
Use high-quality parts
If you’ve read our warning about engine builders using low-grade, no-name rods and cranks, a very similar situation exists in the roller rocker market. We do not use or sell off-shore, no-name roller rockers, period. These products have proven to be faulty in several critical ways:
- The center trunnions are not polished, and the roller tip is often neither true to size nor polished.
- Metal fragments are frequently left inside the trunnion housing, leading to the destruction of the needle bearings.
- The aluminum alloys used are never aircraft-grade, unlike all USA-made roller rockers. These off-shore rockers often claim to use 6061 alloy, but that is a soft aluminum, prone to flex under higher-than-stock spring pressures, which negatively impacts performance.
- The pins and keepers that hold the parts together are often of poor quality and improperly installed.
- The front roller cannot roll properly due to rough internal surfaces, which causes the rocker to drag across the valve tip, resulting in significant wear.
We have seen valve tips scalloped out from such damage, which in turn causes the valves to side-load against the guides in the heads, leading to further harm over time. After scrutinizing these products, we have consistently found issues like these, and there are likely many more. We would not use them in an engine under any circumstances.
Many off-shore stainless-steel rockers also flood the market, but these use low-grade stainless steel with little to no nickel content. However, the lack of hardness in the rocker body is the real issue. These stainless rockers suffer from the same problems we’ve described. These are the roller rockers sold for around $119 to $169, and they are, in our honest opinion, pure junk . While they might be used in a budget backyard build with low spring pressure and a low-lift cam, even in such a scenario, stock stamped rockers would be a better option.
We have heard numerous reports of engines using these rockers that failed, spilling needle bearings into the engine and causing significant damage, often ending up in the oil pump. It seems some engine builders either don’t care about longevity or aren’t aware of the risks. Using low-grade, no-name roller rockers is asking for trouble.
At Skip White Performance, we use Scorpion , Comp Ultra Pro Magnum , and Comp Gold Arc rockers in all of our engines. The difference between these and the low-grade, no-name rockers is enormous. Do a quick Google search on the subject, and you'll see what we mean.
